A sleep score is not a measurement. It is a number each company builds by weighting several inputs, some of which are themselves estimates. No industry standard exists, the formulas are not published in full, and a score of 82 on one device means something different from 82 on another.
What goes into the number
Every manufacturer uses its own recipe, but the ingredients are broadly similar because the sensors are broadly similar.
Most scores are built from some combination of these:
- Total sleep time. How long the device thinks you slept. Usually the heaviest single input.
- Sleep efficiency. Time asleep as a proportion of time in bed.
- Wake episodes. How often and how long you appeared to be awake in the night.
- Stage proportions. How much deep sleep and REM the algorithm estimated.
- Timing. Whether you slept at a consistent hour and in line with your usual pattern.
- Physiological signals. Resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sometimes breathing rate or temperature.
Each input gets a weight. The weights are the proprietary part, and they are where two devices looking at the same night can disagree.
Why the weighting matters more than it sounds
Imagine two people who both slept exactly seven hours. One woke four times briefly. The other slept straight through but went to bed two hours later than usual.
A device that weights continuity heavily will rank the second person higher. A device that weights timing consistency heavily will rank the first person higher. Same sleep, different verdict.
That is not a malfunction. It reflects a genuine judgement call about what counts as good sleep, made by a product team rather than settled by evidence.
What the research actually says
There is an important distinction here between the inputs and the score.
The inputs have been studied. Research comparing consumer devices against polysomnography, the clinical standard, generally finds they detect sleep versus wake reasonably well and classify sleep stages considerably less well. A widely cited 2021 study in SLEEP by Chinoy and colleagues found this pattern across seven consumer devices.
The composite score is a different matter. It is a commercial product, not a validated clinical instrument. We are not aware of a body of independent research establishing that any particular sleep score predicts health outcomes, and manufacturers do not publish their full weighting formulas for external scrutiny.
So the honest summary is this. Some ingredients are moderately reliable, some are weak, and the recipe that combines them has not been independently tested.
There is also a practical consequence of it being a product. Algorithms get revised. A software update can change your score without anything changing in your body or your habits.
Reading your score sensibly
None of this makes the number worthless. It makes it a rough summary rather than a result.
- Compare it only with itself. Your scores across weeks carry information. Your score against a friend’s does not.
- Look at the components, not the total. A score of 74 tells you very little. Seeing that your time in bed dropped by an hour tells you something you can act on.
- Ignore small movements. A few points either way is noise.
- Let how you feel win. If the score says 90 and you feel wrecked, the score is wrong about you.
- Watch the timing input. Consistency of sleep and wake times is both the most reliable thing the device records and one of the better supported ideas in sleep research.
A reasonable habit is to check weekly rather than daily. Daily checking invites you to react to noise.
When the score starts causing the problem
A score is designed to be checked, and that is where it can turn against you.
Clinicians have described a pattern called orthosomnia, in which the pursuit of ideal sleep data becomes a source of anxiety that interferes with sleep. A 2017 case report in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine by Baron and colleagues described patients whose preoccupation with tracker data appeared to be sustaining their sleep difficulty.
The trap is specific to scores. A number that is easy to check, arrives every morning, and looks authoritative is far easier to fixate on than a table of raw figures would be.
If the first thing you do each morning is check the score, and it sets your mood before you have got out of bed, that is worth noticing. Turning the notification off costs you nothing that has been shown to matter.
When to talk to a doctor
No sleep score can identify a sleep disorder. These are the signals worth a professional opinion, whatever your number says.
- You feel persistently unrested during the day despite adequate time in bed.
- Your device repeatedly flags irregular breathing or low blood oxygen during sleep.
- Someone has noticed you snoring loudly, gasping, or stopping breathing while asleep.
- You have had trouble sleeping most nights for three months or longer.
- You have fallen asleep during the day without meaning to, particularly while driving.
- Your sleep score has become something you worry about.
Bring a two-week sleep diary rather than months of app screenshots. Most clinicians will find it more useful, and many will ask for one.
Common questions
What is a good sleep score?
There is no standard answer, because there is no standard score. Each company sets its own ranges. Treat your own typical range as the reference point, and pay attention to sustained movement away from it rather than to any particular threshold.
Why is my score low when I feel fine?
Usually because the algorithm weighted something you do not experience as a problem, such as brief wake episodes or an unusual bedtime. How rested you feel is the more meaningful measure. The score is an estimate about you, not a report from you.
Why did my score change after a software update?
Because the formula changed. Manufacturers revise their algorithms and their weightings. This is a useful reminder that the number is a product decision rather than a physical reading.
Can I compare my score with my partner’s?
Not meaningfully, even on identical devices. Scores are shaped by personal baselines, age, and resting heart rate. Comparing them tells you about the algorithm rather than about either person’s sleep.
Should I try to improve my sleep score?
Aim at the underlying behaviour instead. Consistent sleep and wake times, enough time in bed, and sensible caffeine timing are supported by research. Optimising a proprietary number is not the same goal, and it can pull you toward anxiety about sleep.
Do doctors use sleep scores?
Generally not as evidence. A clinician may find it useful that your data suggests a pattern, but diagnosis rests on clinical assessment and, where needed, a sleep study. Professional guidance is clear that consumer devices do not diagnose sleep disorders.
